Pharmaceutical Science is developing fast and without updating the knowledge one cannot effectively work as a Pharmacist. The Annual Renewal of Pharmacy Registration has been made mandatory to ensure the efficiency of a Person to work as a Pharmacist, not only with physique but also with knowledge. In western countries like USA, U.K and Canada Pharmacy Registration can be renewed only after the successful completion of orientation courses.
Government of India has decided to amend the Medical Council Act to incorporate a clause to the effect that Medical Council Registration shall be renewed only after the completion of 30 hour- Continuing Medical Education Programme spreading over a period of 5 years. Definitely the same system will be applicable in the Pharmacy Act also within a few years. In short, without attending Continuing Education Programmes, Pharmacist cannot work in hospitals, medical stores, educational Institutions, manufacturing units or in enforcement wing.
Government of Kerala Vide G.O has authorised the State Pharmacy Council to organise Continuing Pharmacy Education Programmes. Government has permitted to utilize the facilities of Government Institutions and also to utilize the service of officers of the Health Services department, Medical Education Department and Drugs Control Department for the above purpose. The period of training will be treated as duty and the certificate will be entered in the service book of the Pharmacists working in the Health Services Department. Labour Ministry vide G.O. has also extended the same benefits to the pharmacists working in E.S.I. Institutions.
Pharmacy Council of India has given consent to the State Pharmacy Council Vide Ref...... to conduct Continuing Education Programmes for Pharmacists and Pharmacy teachers. A maximum of six classes can be organized in a year. PCI will give financial assistance of Rs.5000/- for each such courses.
Kerala State Pharmacy Council has organised a number of such orientation classes. The Continuing Education Programmes were arranged in all the Districts in Kerala except Idukki and Wyanad.
Council has also decided to organise an orientation course for Pharmacy teachers and Enforcement officers. Those who are willing to attend the course may send their application to the Registrar along with a self addressed stamped cover. "Application for Continuing Education Programme for ................." should be written in the application cover. The date, venue and the course details will be sent to selected applicants, immediately after finalising the programme.
Council has decided to organise classes at Wyanad and Idukki. Those Registered Pharmacists who are willing to attend the Continuing Education Programme at Wyanad and Idukki may send their application in white paper to "The Registrar, Kerala State Pharmacy Council, Thiruvananthapuram - 695035" along with a self addressed stamped cover.
Kerala State Pharmacy Council has already conducted one month preliminary course in computer application throughout the State. More than 7000 pharmacists and Pharmacy students have undergone the computer courses organised at 61 centres in 14 Districts. Spider Soft Services, Thiruvananthapuram, an agency under the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India has undertaken this hectic task and completed successfully with the co-operation of the organizations and Institutions of Pharmacy.
Dr. C.K.Kokate, President, Pharmacy Council of India releasing the Pharmasol Excel, an exclusive Software for Pharmacy Practical, developed by KSPC Mrs. Archana Mudgal, Secretary & Prof Vijay Sing, Vice President of PCI are also seen.
The Council was compelled to organise an advanced level course in Computer Application following the strong request of Pharmacists and the Pharmacists organisations. After considering the Project reports submitted by a number of Institutions approved by the Central and State Governments the Council unanimously authorised M/s. Spider Soft Services, Thiruvananthapuram to conduct the Advanced Level Course, who had quoted the lowest fee structure.
The Advanced Level Course comprises the following topics apart from the fundamentals of computer.
The course was started on 5th February 2001 at 4 centers in Thiruvananthapuram district. All the participants are fully satisfied with the curriculum and arrangements provided which include study materials. The course in other districts will start immediately.
Pharmacists and Pharmacy students who are willing to join the Advanced Level Computer Course can send their application to the Registrar. Application form can be down loaded from the website. On the application cover mention "Application for Computer Course .............. Dist". A self addressed stamped cover should also be enclosed. A Demand Draft of Rs.50/- should also be enclosed as registration fee.
The date of the commencement of the computer class and venue of the class will be intimated immediately after finalizing the programme in your district.
Kerala State Pharmacy Council has decided to give cash awards and mementoes to rank holders in Pharmacy Degree and Diploma Final year examinations. Cash award of Rs. 1500/- will be given to the first rank holder of B. Pharm Final year Degree Course conducted by the Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi and Calicut Universities. Mementoes will also be presented to the prize winners.
Cash awards of Rs. 1500/- for the first rank holder and Rs. 1001/- for the second rank holder of the D.Pharm Final year exam, conducted by the Board of D. Pharm exams, Government of Kerala, will be presented. Mementoes will also be presented.
The rank holders in B. Pharm / D. Pharm Final Year Examinations are requested, to send the attested mark list along with an application in plain paper to the Council immediately after publishing the respective results.
The Council is publishing "Pharmacists Desk Reference" as a guide to the Pharmacists, working in hospitals and Medical Stores. Sri. K. G. Ravikumar, Chief, Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy Department, Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram is the Editor of the Desk Reference. An Editorial Board with Senior faculty members from Pharmacy Institutions, Officers of Drugs Control Department and Health Services Department has been constituted. The Desk Reference is under printing and it will be released soon.
